Lotus tea-making recognized as national intangible cultural heritage
VGP - The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized Ha Noi’s traditional lotus tea craft in Quang An Ward, Tay Ho District as a national intangible cultural heritage.
The trade in Quang An has a long history, closely linked to the famous West Lake area.
Long ago, Quang An locals skillfully marinated Tan Cuong green tea from Viet Nam's northern province of Thai Nguyen (the largest tea growing area in Viet Nam) with Bach Diep lotus grown in West Lake. The result is a distinctive and unique flavor of lotus-scented tea that cannot be found anywhere else.
According to Nguyen Thi Dan, a century-old Quang An lotus tea artisan, making the finest tasting lotus tea requires finesse and attention to detail.
Quang An is a vast lotus-growing area in the capital and also the cradle of the famous lotus-scented tea craft. The locals have preserved the age-old tradition and put a lot of effort into keeping it alive. The tea is not only a favorite specialty of tourists, but also a representation of Ha Noi's culinary heritage.
The recognition as a national intangible cultural treasure encourages artists to continue promoting the capital's thousand-year-old cultural heritage. It provides an additional opportunity to showcase Ha Noi's tourism and cultural attributes to domestic and foreign travelers.
Earlier, the first lotus festival of Ha Noi was kick-started at the Cultural and Creative Space in Tay Ho district from July 12-16, 2024 with its opening ceremony attracting more than 5,000 participants and witnessing two Viet Nam's records awarded.
Tay Ho District is hosting the inaugural Ha Noi Lotus Festival. The district has partnered with the Ha Noi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Research at the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences to implement the "Building a Model of Lotus Production Associated with Ecotourism Development in Tay Ho, Ha Noi" project. This initiative aims to revive, develop, and expand the Bach Diep lotus variety, establishing the Tay Ho lotus brand.
Ha Noi's extensive 600 hectares of lotus cultivation spans districts such as Tay Ho, My Duc, Me Linh, and Thach That. These lotus ponds have become increasingly popular with locals and tourists, particularly in the summer./.
