VGP - Ha Noi is set to install a network of 1,873 AI-powered cameras at all intersections this December as part of a broader effort to modernize infrastructure, enhance traffic safety, and reduce congestion across the capital.

According to the municipal Traffic Police Division, the new system features 360-degree scanning, precise object detection within a range of 500–700 meters, and reliable operation under all weather and environmental conditions.

Lieutenant Colonel Dao Viet Long, deputy head of the division, said the initiative represents a key milestone in the city's digital transformation roadmap for the traffic police sector.

Unlike conventional surveillance systems, these AI cameras can analyze and process images directly on the device, allowing for fast and accurate identification of traffic violations and security incidents.

The system also enables license plate recognition and accident detection, contributing to a smarter, safer, and more modern urban transport network, Dao noted.

Each AI camera includes a built-in computer that processes data locally before transmitting it to a central monitoring hub, where the information is cross-checked with databases to ensure accuracy and improve response efficiency.

Captain Nguyen Sy Dai from the Traffic Command and Signal Control Team said the cameras will automatically measure traffic volumes at intersections and transmit real-time data to adjust traffic light cycles, helping optimize traffic flow and reduce waiting times.

"In addition to the 605 cameras already operating at 129 intersections, we plan to install AI cameras at about 180 more intersections soon. By next year, all intersections citywide are expected to be covered," Nguyen said.

Beyond improving safety and easing congestion, the AI system is also expected to raise public awareness about traffic law compliance.

Nguyen Thanh Trung, a 32-year-old resident of Ha Dong District, expressed support for the initiative, saying the cameras would help improve driver awareness and encourage more responsible behavior on the roads.

Under Ha Noi's master plan for camera surveillance management, the city plans to install over 40,000 AI cameras during the 2025–2030 period, including more than 16,000 dedicated to traffic management./.
