State President visits ex-prisoners of Hoa Lo

VGP - State President Truong Tan Sang on July 23 visited Hoa Lo Prison (Maison Centrale) relic and met with former revolutionaries who were imprisoned by the French colonists from 1930 to 1945 at Hoa Lo Prison.

President Truong Tan Sang made statement at the meeting to mark 67th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27), and the 60th anniversary of the capital’s liberation (October 10).

He praised the contributions of generations of revolutionary soldiers to Viet Nam’s struggle for independence and freedom. He affirmed that the Party and State always greatly appreciate the sacrifices made by them.

The combative spirit and sacrifice of Hoa Lo prisoners were everlasting examples in the cause of national construction and defense, he added

He wished them good health and happiness with their families and set an exemplary role model especially in instilling patriotism and self-reliance in younger generations.

Mr. Sang asked relevant ministries, sectors and Ha Noi city to continue paying tribute to and expressing gratitude for those who contributed to the revolution and the nation, with specific and relevant policies to take care of war veterans.

Hoa Lo prison was built in Ha Noi by the French colonialists in 1896. Most of the Hoa Lo revolutionaries have died and many soldiers have been suffering from consequences of cruel torture and long detainment at the prison. It is reported that most of the Hoa Lo revolutionaries have died, and only few are still alive aged between 80 and 100. 

Now, Hoa Lo Prison is a historical site open to visitors.
