HN strives for less HIV infection cases

VGP – In the first ten months of 2016, 582 new cases of HIV infection were recorded in Ha Noi, representing a year-on-year decline of 22.8%, according to Director of the Ha Noi Centre for HIV/AIDS Prevention Le Nhan Tuan.

In the reviewed time, 470 cases developing into AIDS were reported, down 28.9% against the same period last year. The number of deaths of AIDS was 60, down 33.6% against the same period last year.

So far, over 19,000 people are living with HIV, including 9,115 AIDS patients in Ha Noi. The rate of HIV/AIDS infection was 254 out of 100,000 people.  

In the January-October period, HIV-positive males accounted for 71.5% of total infected cases. The new HIV infected cases were on the rise due to sexual diseases. Especially, HIV/AIDS positive cases made up 83.7% of the new cases in the groups of 25-49 year-old people.

The Director also reported that as of late October 31, up to 4,402 people received Methadone treatment at 11 establishments.

Since the beginning of the year, 14,247 drug addicts were give free-of-charge injection needles. Up to 13,648 people accessed free condoms, including 1,715 female prostitutes. Over 11,900 high-risk people received HIV tests.

Director Tuan revealed that nearly 40% of HIV carriers had medical insurance.

The Ha Noi Department of Health set a target of all HIV patients being covered by health insurance which costs each VND 700,000 (US$ 33) per year.

The Department also aimed to ensure that medical establishments would not discriminate or reveal identificationof HIV carriers./.
